Optical and Optoelectronic devices are at the core of today’s information revolution, bridging digital electronics and optical fiber telecommunications. However, there is a worrisome disparity in the scaling of global internet traffic and the capacity of the optical network. Therefore, there is a need for new miniaturized optoelectronic technologies based on new nanophotonic devices, and integration on silicon is a must. Nanophotonics and integrated photonics will play in the near future a role similar to microelectronics for electronic circuits, overcoming existing technological limits in telecommunications, computation, sensing and other fields. The Nanophotonics Devices group, established at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - Center for Convergent Technologies in Genova in April 2021, studies new nanophotonic devices for optoelectronics and sensing applications, focusing the research on novel two dimensional materials and their applications for light modulation and wavefront manipulation.
